The Black Exorcist Shave
20170117_100321.jpg

Razor: Gillette Slim (4+8 combo)
Blade: Shark SS (2)
Brush: Semogue 830
Soap: Razorock Tuscan Oud
Aftershave: Dr Jon's Classic Aftershave Tonic (new product for me)
Cologne: Dunhill Edition (not pictured)
Bowl: Greenpike Special

Thoughts:
- I've got lots of deliveries atm (second hand mostly) and so I decided that one new product a shave is probably the safest way to see what I like best. I was on the verge of christening the B&M Roam but when I first sniffed Dr Jon's and its rosemary goodness I knew what soap in my kit would pair best. I've also read some negatives about RR recently so thought I might offer a humble counter-argument with this bravely scented soap. I've called Tuscan Oud the "Catholic Mass" before but after today's smooth BBS shave paired with Dr Jon... I'm wearing black and walking around like a mofo exorcist - "the power of Christ compels you"! Dunhill Edition rounds everything out with some tobacco but I forgot to put the bottle in the shot.
- Oh, and today is the first BBS on my chin & lips! I can feel the skin start to surrender to its daily kiss of stainless steel. Also first time with no balm on the area and only aftershave because my oily skin is starting to over-moisten and I didn't need any help.

Hot day, cold shave. Inspired by @Cris's recent video I decided to have my first cold water shave in a long time. It went really well, especially as it's just hit 41° out here! I also decided to do a couple of comparisons, namely the Whipped Dog 30mm and 24mm brushes and the Parker 97R and Slim on 9. My DEs haven't been getting a lot of love lately, as I really wanted to acquaint myself properly with the Hawk, but the Parker was my first 'real' safety razor and I'm always impressed with the engineering of the Slim. This was the third shave on the Polsilver and it performed really well, sharp and smooth.

It's weird how having a new point of reference can completely change your experience of something, for example I never thought of the 24mm as being 'floppy', and although I never thought it was particularly dense, I didn't think it wasn't dense either, if that makes sense. Compared to the 30mm though it's positively sparse and floppy. It definitely splays way easier though. I don't really know which one I like better at this stage, the 24mm feels softer (maybe the individual fibres are softer, maybe it's just the lower density/backbone) and splays better, the 24mm is way more dense and still very soft. They both make great lather. I lathered the right side of my face with the 30mm and the left with the 24mm.

For the razors I used the Slim on 9 because, as far as I could see with my naked eye, that was the closest blade gap to the Parker. I shaved the right side of my face with the Parker and the left with the Slim. After the first pass results were very similar on both sides, both comfortable, neither super close, but decent for a first pass. An interesting thing that I did notice is that it felt like I needed to use a pretty significantly different angle/technique for each razor; the Parker seems most comfortable with a slightly higher angle, there's plenty of blade feel (in fact most of the time it feels like the blade is the only thing in contact with the skin), but it's still comfortable. It is a bit more difficult to maintain this around areas like the chin though. The Slim on the other hand seemed to need a more shallow angle, and I could always feel the guard bar. I did two passes with each razor, swapping the Polsilver blade between them. I did my third pass with the Slim on 3 for the ATG/cleanup and a mostly BBS shave.

Lovely shave and a bit of fun experimenting with my gear (and cooling off on a hot day).

As Mad @Maxime D. brought to my attention, really diggin' that hunk of copper, @Greenpike. Nice work.

Saponoficio Varesino "70th Anniversary"

Was looking through the den for items to part with last night and realised that the SV 70 set had not been used in some time. I was going to put it on the chopping block but for whatever reason decided to give it a run this morning. Boy am I glad I did! Excellent performing soap and great lather. Post shave from the soap alone was nothing to get too excited about IMO and certainly not as good as I get from Mike's Natural Soaps. No matter though as the splash really sorted that out and got my skin back how I like it to be after a good shave. Overall a fantastic outing and the SV has saved itself from the chopping block for now.

And, of course, the porcine goodness of the Semogue!

Occam's Crushed Lime Pre
Boots Manchurian
ATT Colossus
Feather
Eufros by JabonMan Cítricos Soap
Eufros by JabonMan Cítricos Balm
Australian Private Reserve Fête au Citron

Woke up to the fantastic performance and fragrance of Manuel's Citrus, effortless loadingand the indescribably good lather of these handmade soaps, I cannot wait for my next order to arrive already, it's the one artisan soap I could so easily use for the rest of my life. The usual two passes then a more adequate than usual wash off and drenching in cold water for that refreshing, cold face feel and immaculately clean start to the day.

It was almost like Fête au Citron and Cítricos were made for each other, two refined and balanced citrus scents that harmonize perfectly, the slight differences in the individual accords compliment each other perfectly and seat perfectly in the oppressive, continual heat of Summer. The pairing reminds me of Hydra without the almost cloying sweetness, the musk and amber really coming through underneath the intensity of the tart, citrus notes of the tops. A very enjoyable fragrance for the ideal summer shave, it will be very hard to resist shaving with this combination 3 or 4 days a week with the current heat.

Have a bloody good day you glorious, capital bastards :)

The loft is a little high to be honest meaning it's softer than I would have ideally liked but I tend towards the softer, handmade soaps anyway reserving the Doug Korn for the triple milled soaps that need a little more backbone. The face feel of the brush as to be expected is excellent from the Manchurian :)

Razor: iKon X3
Blade: GSB (4)
Post-shave: Alum, Emu Oil, Saponificio Varesino 70th Anniversary

Inspired by @nsavage today. I really enjoy the scent on this soap, and it performs really well.
I get a far nicer lather off the puck from this soap than I do with the "Fat", but the post shave feel is not as good for me.
Luckily I have the aftershave which quickly sorts out any face feel issues, just need a really vigorous shaking!
Anyway, hope all you Melbournian's are enjoying the far more comfortable weather today! Shave well fella's!

Razor: Merkur 34c
Blade: Polsilver Super Iridium (2)
Brush: Semogue 620
Soap: Phoenix & Beau Sanskrit
Post: Witch Hazel, TSW Balm

2.5 pass shave, with the fantastic Sanskrit soap. I’d say that there is only one or two shaves worth left in the container. I simultaneously really want to finish the product and never want it to run out.o_O

*excuse the shit photo - was in a great rush!*
Pre: AoS - Sandalwood
Brush: Shavemac - Custom 26mm Two Band D01
Soap: Stirling - MITA
Razor: Gem Micromatic - Clog Pruf
Blade: Modern Gem (0)
Post: Stirling Unscented balm & MITA Splash.

Skin rather dry today so started with the oil in an attempt to hydrate. Brush needs no introduction, nor does the soap although I have been playing around with lather techniques. I get the same lather I do with MW, very dense and heavy so I am interested to know if I can get a lighter lather. Failed today but still a great lather.

I was warned the razor is aggressive and as a SR user this did not bother me at all. An interesting thing to note with this design is the face of the head is to placed flat on your face in theory giving the perfect blade angle without thought. Older stye GEMs the head is parallel with the blade, so does not go flat on your face. It's an obvious indication of blade angle though. So, I found I couldn't soften the aggressiveness of this razor by reducing blade angle, the razor is already flat to the skin but hey, I didn't need to worry about it either. This IS an aggressive (efficient) razor and given there aren't too many (if any!?) blade choices, there is nothing that you can do to soften it. The result was a true BBS shave with only minor irritation and weepers on my upper lip/corner of my mouth. In hind sight I should have not used a new blade, but I think I need to get a little more used to the razor yet and could well have been using too much pressure (ie - some!). I am confident that after a few shaves, the irritation and weepers will be gone.

So, due to the irritation I added some balm, then splash and off with the day. Tomorrow I might have another shave with it but using an old blade which I think is up to about 7 shaves.
