Shave of the Day Thread - 2017

Three days in Melbourne with only carry on bag so no straights allowed or even a DE blade, So:

ARKO stick
cheap synth
BIC Single blade disposable - I don't need any 107 blade contraption: one blade does the trick
Face lather

I am continually amazed at the quality of shaves I get using 3 pass & stretching techniques formed on this site. Although not razor sharp, good method & practices can overcome substandard tools. ARKO was good as always. Very reasonable shaves.

Musgo Glyce
Boots Manchurian
Timeless
Feather
B&M Sandalwood
Barristers Reserve Spice
Chatillon Lux Bon Vivant
APR General Ledger EDP

A nice cool day and a chance to give the sweet currant notes of Latha Sandalwood an outing, I get very little (if any) Sandalwood from the soap, an effortless lather and the usual two passes. A liberal application of rapidly fading Reserve Spice that makes a great facial toner, then on with the Chatillon Lux and some EDP. A pleasing start to Thursday.

Enjoy your shaves gents :penguin:

Is it Thursday already @todras ?? The week is flying :ROFLMAO:

Great shave last night. During yesterday I read a bit of barber history from the late 1800's. A common practice was to use lead on the linen strop before leather. I had a freshly honed blade so grabbed a fishing sinker and rubbed it on the linen until the colour had obviously changed.

Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, to all the comments about toxicity etc, so no need to ask or comment. Just on that though, if you want to try it yourself, research it and remember it is a toxic metal.

I'm not sure how or why it works as I wouldn't have thought the lead would be overly abrasive, yet the blade is refined to a level beyond what I normally achieve. The shave is super smooth and yet extremely keen.

Cleaning the blade before the leather removes any residual lead and wiping the blade well before the shave checks there is nothing left on the blade.

Scuttle lathered and made far too much lather but hey :) soap is not too expensive. My modified Omega 10098 boar [red gum handle] is a joy to use and freely gives all the lather you make.

Total Height: 145mm
Bristle Loft: 65mm
Knot Dia: 27mm
Hair: Boar

2 passes last night for a solid DFS++ and sadly I probably won't need a shave this evening.

Thats very interesting Steve... I wonder if the lead acts as a lubricant / reduces friction on the linen ... smoother edge?? Or just a super fine strop paste??

Hi @Snooze I have read further and it is estimated the lead oxide is about the same particle size as chrome oxide but provides all the qualities you listed. Not that I'm overly cautious but I've decided to store my lead oxide impregnated strop in a sealed plastic bag between uses.

This is a long post from other straight users over about a 2 year period of using lead on their strops. I found this one today.

coming from an engineer lead was commonly used as a lubricant in fuels as well as in soft metal bushes and bearing so i think you may be onto something with that idea

Soap: Stirling - MITA
Brush: Chubby 2 Best
Strop: Kanoyama #3k & Roo
Blade: Tanifuji 6/8 Full Sqaure
Post: Stirling - MITA

Another hot hot hot day here in paradise so out with the menthol. Something wasn't right though. I was having to think about what hand the razor was/should be in, what direction I was going etc. Normally I don't even think about method because it's always the exactly the same and muscle memory does what it does. About half way thorough the first pass it dawned on me that I was going ATG! Nearly kept going since it was not uncomfortable but no. Keep going but WTG please. This time - it all snapped into place and I finished with a second pass ATG. It is good to know I could do a single ATG pass if I needed too.

Feather AC DX non-folding with Pro Super blade (11)
Monsavon Bol a Raser
Platypus brush
Re-lather and cold rinse

A rushed WTG/ATG BBS today. I slipped once due to the rush but didn't get cut - this blade is right in that sweet spot now of not being too sharp. If it was a young blade there would have been blood I'm sure! After a few weeks rehydrating this puck into the cream bowl it should be, it gives a great middle of the road lather and post shave feel. Scent is artificial - as usual I would rather it wasn't there at all...
