Mmmm. Shaver Heaven lathers well and is a great performer. Honey Ale is my favourite at the moment and it complimented the funky notes of my new vintage aftershave, Maxim's Pour Homme. I liked this AS so much I've gone and ordered some EDT on the bay.

I'm sophisticated, baby.

Oh, and the General is back. Still haven't found something to beat it. It's my Goldilocks razor.

Date: 29 May 2018

Pre-shave:- Cold Water straight from the tap
Brush:- RazoRock Plissoft Synth. 24/57mm knot
Soap/Cream:- Valobra (4 shaving sticks grated into a 250ml plastic tub)
Razor/Blade:- Merkur 34C / Astra Superior Stainless #7
Post-shave:- Thayers Witch Hazel & Tea Tree Oil / Lucky Tiger Face Moisturizer / Lucky Tiger Aftershave & Face Tonic
Fragrance:- Lagerfeld Classic

Semogue Boar
Proraso Red
Yaqi OC/Ballend
Derby
Witch Hazel
Viet Fougere
Oud Attar

Decided to give the Derby another chance.Used the same soap and wanted to see if the Yaqi head would work with the blade yet it seems I do not like Derby blades.Again needed three passes and an average result that left me wanting for a smoother face.

Razor: Vintage Gillette 'Fatboy' Adjustable (5)
Blade: Vintage NOS Gillette Super Stainless (1)
Brush: Vintage butterscotch Simpson
Soap/Cream: Phoenix & Beau Spitfire shaving soap
Aftershave: The Stray Whisker (TSW) After Balm balm
Fragrance: Phoenix & Beau Spitfire solid cologne

Now that is a REAL shave right there. Vintage Gillette hardware all around, leather, tobacco and courage from the P&B Spitfire, classic lubrication and protection from the TSW After Balm.

Not a cock well in sight with its prissy interchangable heads, could you imagine trying to win a war while wondering where you had put your R1 plate ...

There seems to be a few Fatboys getting a run this week in the SOTD's....

Pre: my lemon Myrtle pre shave oil
Rockwell R3 w/Polsilver
Muhle silvertip fibre L v2
MWF
Anherb balm

Just a simple MWF shave today with the milder R3 plate. My skin is still recovering from the soap reaction yesterday.

Tuesday shave:

Pre: Myrsol emulsion
maquina: Weber/UFO goliath
cuchilla: Astra verde
brocha: semogue 2000
jabon: ByLuna Foroafeitado LE 2018
locion: APR Coolabah
EdP APR Fougere Bourbon Rose

Really nice shave. I didn't really need the emulsion as pre, but I use it from time to time as it is good for the skin. The soap is not very strongly scented so I can pick up a splash according to my mood without any interference

Some lather today :D

Final set of hones in my experiment : Reset the bevel on a 1 K then progress through soft and hard Arkansas, a 10k synthetic and then a significant number of finishing strokes on my Chinese natural.
To say the edge was textbook was an understatement. It was the poster child for pristine bevels, but looks aren't everything.
It was very sharp and yet didn't feel sharp. The skin was smooth after the first pass but the feedback was so not there. I normally use the Cnat with a progression of slurry stones and it is very similar to my Jnat in terms of feel and performance. I suppose it is possible to get an edge so smooth it lacks character. When I first started honing the appearance of this type of edge would have made me very happy and a less than stellar actual shave would have been attributed to poor blade technique. I have since early on learned that looks can be deceiving. :)

My first shave in this experiment which I didn't record was with my Jnat progression. I knew this would be an excellent finish so used it as a benchmark to guage the others.

This is all a very subjective preference order as the differences may not be apparent to another shaver with out knowledge of the stones used. My scoring means nothing really but looks better with a number !!
#1 Jnat Hard Shave score -9-
#2 Coticle Medium Shave score -8.5-
#3 Arkansas Coticule combo Medium, Very Hard Shave score -8-
#4 Arkansas - Very Hard, but with oil not slow. Shave score -8-
#5 Cnat. Medium Shave score -8-

I'm also not saying #1 is all that better than #5. Just different.
The Sheffield steel in the Bengall is fairly soft and may require a particular stone combo to bring out the best. Hard steel/Soft stone or something like that.
6/8" Bengall
Semogue Boar with my soap
Tonight the shave was good. The finished shave was a very solid 2 pass DFS+. A small amount of irritation but not a drop of blood or any DE type scraping.

If I had the time and patience I would do this with a few more blades. I don't :) I will however try to get an even better handle on the Coticule. The Jnat and the Coticule may be a worthwhile adventure.

A massive massive shout out to @Cris for the plates for my Rockwell. Also lads hit up Cris on "Another Cut Above" ' on YouTube great videos & live feeds I picked up on one extra technique today from watching ;).

Also this would not have all come to fruition for me had it not been for @SpeedyPC with his help on technique and angle assistance thanks bro.

Another in the journey to getting to the Rockwell 6c is my Nephew @Lifes a Peach for the lend of 3/4 3 piece razors to trial thanks bro.

I've been using them now for 12 month or more they are the ones @Cris is using now, I sent him a pack they are the best I personally have used many others over many years these suit among all others and there has been a few different ones I can tell you. Again remember it's all very individual to each WS

Prep:
DR Harris Coconut shampoo bar, Myrsol Emulsion
Brush: None
Soap: Cella
Razor: Merkur Futur (2)
Blade: NOS Wilkinson Sword Super-sword (1)
Post: Myrsol Emulsion
Scent: DR Harris Arlington EdC

That sinking feeling when you are far from home on extended work assignment, set up for your first shave, and realise you forgot to pack your shaving brush into your wet pack. I can see it now, happily ensconced in its gray plastic travel cylinder, sitting on my kitchen table.
Well, one must make do. Thankfully, I had my trusty Myrsol Emulsion roll-on, which was applied copiously as a pre-shave. I had also packed Cella, a relatively soft soap. I bloomed it well, and lathered up by hand. By no means an impressive looking lather, but I did not stop until I could feel slickness and it had a wee bit of sheen. I plunged ahead, taking great care with my technique.
I’m happy to report that the NOS Wilkie and Merkur Futur glided nicely around my face. Did not push it beyond 2 passes, but I can honestly say that the closeness was DFS. A tiny patch of irritation on the neck, immediately rectified by the Myrsol Emulsion post-shave.
Whilst I’m not recommending it unless circumstances dictate, it is surprising how good a shave you can get with equipment limitations, provided most of your kit is good quality gear, and you concentrate.
