Final set of hones in my experiment : Reset the bevel on a 1 K then progress through soft and hard Arkansas, a 10k synthetic and then a significant number of finishing strokes on my Chinese natural.
To say the edge was textbook was an understatement. It was the poster child for pristine bevels, but looks aren't everything.
It was very sharp and yet didn't feel sharp. The skin was smooth after the first pass but the feedback was so not there. I normally use the Cnat with a progression of slurry stones and it is very similar to my Jnat in terms of feel and performance. I suppose it is possible to get an edge so smooth it lacks character. When I first started honing the appearance of this type of edge would have made me very happy and a less than stellar actual shave would have been attributed to poor blade technique. I have since early on learned that looks can be deceiving.
My first shave in this experiment which I didn't record was with my Jnat progression. I knew this would be an excellent finish so used it as a benchmark to guage the others.
This is all a very subjective preference order as the differences may not be apparent to another shaver with out knowledge of the stones used. My scoring means nothing really but looks better with a number !!
#1 Jnat Hard Shave score -9-
#2 Coticle Medium Shave score -8.5-
#3 Arkansas Coticule combo Medium, Very Hard Shave score -8-
#4 Arkansas - Very Hard, but with oil not slow. Shave score -8-
#5 Cnat. Medium Shave score -8-
I'm also not saying #1 is all that better than #5. Just different.
The Sheffield steel in the Bengall is fairly soft and may require a particular stone combo to bring out the best. Hard steel/Soft stone or something like that.

Tonight the shave was good. The finished shave was a very solid 2 pass DFS+. A small amount of irritation but not a drop of blood or any DE type scraping.
If I had the time and patience I would do this with a few more blades. I don't
I will however try to get an even better handle on the Coticule. The Jnat and the Coticule may be a worthwhile adventure.
