Gents, I tried the Mitchells wool fat last night, what am I doing wrong?

It feels slick enough but it's very hard to get that thick bubbly lather I'm after, it feels like lathering up a hand soap.

is this normal?

with the Tabac, I was able to get a thick lather off the bat.

I can't give you a solution as I've not used MWF, however it is known to be a little temperamental - so you are not alone!

Hopefully somebody will come along with a solution.

EDIT: as the risk of asking a stupid question, you did buy the shaving soap and not the hand soap?

Not a stupid question at all! I bought the shave soap from Beard and Blade, Maybe it was still new and rigid, I'll give it another go again tonight and I'll let some water sit on the puck for a bit to help it bloom. (The link you sent for the shave soap is exactly the one I bought)

I remember the proraso was a big fan of the water treatment.

Be careful with those coughs and keep an eye on her, we got it and as my wife and mother inlaw found out if you have a cough for too long you can break ribs so call up the doc if she gets sore.
Thanks for the advice as everybody I've spoken too mentioned the cough can linger weeks after infection...?

On the bright side she tested Negative on a RAT today and feels a lot better so fingers crossed I test Negative in a few days as the worst is behind me. (y)

Yeah MWF is a thirsty soap so take the time loading a damp brush and work the lather in a bowl until it reaches a good consistency as well worth it for post shave face feel.

SOTN 22.6.22
/ Troycraft Purple Cloud
/ Whispers from the Woods
/ Blutt Rasur BR-1 0.99
/ Bic Chrome Platinum (1)
/ The Ordinary Glycolic Toner
/ Nivea Skin & Stubble

If there was any razor that could tame the divisive Bic face scraper it’d be the Blutt. Still very sharp mind you, had a couple of nicks on slight bumps at usual areas but little harshness.

The whispers soap I found to be really thirsty. A fresh scented good performer nonetheless especially at the discounted price from thewetshavingco.

Didn't take much to open up a big hole in the bottom of this puck... :(

Yep the cough and loss of smell can both stick around for a while, cough for up to something like 6 weeks potentially and well i still barely smell a thing and it was over a month ago
Have fun and hope for your guys sake you come negative soon so you can get back to life

I had a love hate relationship with MWF. Some shaves were great and sometimes it felt lacking. My puck has now been relegated to bath soap (and sometimes pre-shave) duties.

Ooh. I hope I don't get it. I can cope with being sick, but not being able to smell or taste would be a real hardship. Still, I've been lucky thus far, so it would be churlish to complain.

Relax baby grasshopper, MWF master is here to help you, dummy. MWF behaves differently from Tabac.

Lots of good advice above. It took a while for me to find a method that consistently produced good lather. What works for me is heavy loading with a wet brush. It is worth persevering, as it is terrific lather and a wonderful post shave experience.

If you haven't heard of Outlaw Soaps https://liveoutlaw.com/, they are a small artisan soap maker in Nevada who make Western themed body soaps, colognes and lotions. I stumbled across them years ago by accident and they made the best scents inspired by the old west, with leather, camp fire, gun smoke, tobacco and whiskey their main scents. I've been trying to get them to make a shaving soap and although they seem keen to do so, it hasn't happened yet.
