Mycroft Late Nite Shave
20170507_231902.jpg

Razor: Colonial General with Stray Whisker handle
Blade: Feather Pro (2)
Soap: APR Mycroft
Brush: K Shave Worx Gamechanger
Post: APR Mycroft AS + Bogart One Man Show EdT

Thoughts...
- I am moving to a late night Sunday Shave as I normally have early starts Monday. I wanted a luxurious experience and APR is always the ticket for that.
- Mycroft is the pinnacle of the 5 @todras scents that I own. I'm about to own 6 with Alfredus on its way - that's how much of a fan boy I am. If you haven't ever tried Mycroft then please do. Through alchemy Dan has created my favourite tobacco scent without actually using tobacco and it is a deep and dark and smokey and sophisticated experience. The aftershave has a good sting and beautiful face feel. The soap has brilliant cushion, glide and slickness. I had not one weeper and didn't feel the need to use alum (which I do most shaves with the Colonial when I go for a proper BBS). You feel very protected with these two top quality products.
- I'm one of those people who do not like the tallow smell of the APR soap base (if you've tried old Stirling or P&B then you know that tallow smell). Some of you who think all that matters is performance will think I'm a wuss bag but there it is. HOWEVER - there is no problem at all with the Mycroft soap because the funk is almost completely masked by the fragrance and what isn't masked is complimentary. Mycroft is the best Australian AS & soap combo out at the moment. I would buy a shower gel and deodorant too if they existed.
- This One Man Show EDT also works brilliantly with the Mycroft. Even better than my previous match in Dunhill Edition. Indeed, if you purchase it via feelingsexy.com.au, it is even cheaper.

Brush: Omega Synthetic Hi-Brush
Soap: Proraso Green
Razor: Merkur Progress (+1.5/2.5)
Blade: Derby Extra (2)
Lotion: Omega Alum Stick / Mennen Skin Bracer / Nivea Post Shave Balm

In an attempt to figure out how to property use the Progress, I tried a 2-pass shave (WTG, XTG) with the mild Derby Extra blade. On the second pass (XTG), I incurred a tiny weeper on my right cheek. This is rare. Nevertheless, in my attempt to understand the Progress, I gave it some thought.

It occurred to me that I am left-handed. No surprise that, but there was also the realization that I cannot recall a cut, nick or weeper that was NOT on the right side--nary a one. I do not switch hands while shaving. This circumstance is perhaps mere chance, but I doubt it. It is a simple but curious correlation, with many variables. Though causation cannot validly be inferred, it is of interest.

Your experience with the Progress seem to similar to mine. Although it may be a razor capable of giving a good close shave. I find it aggressive even on low settings and badly behaved, always sticking out its elbows and biting for no good reason. I have heard some people have had problems with blade alignment, though I don't think that is my problem. Mine now lives at the back of the cupboard in the naughty corner. I have many razors I would rather use

The General continues to give good results, though I don't think the Kai Pinks are my blade. Will post a soap review in the travel box thread in a bit.

This is my D01 equivalent brush. Plenty of scrub, soft tips and zero scritch. Got the knot from a supplier in China, stuck it in a TF handle.

  • Soap: Mike's Orange, Cedar-wood and Black Pepper
  • Brush: Shavemac D01 2 Band Extreme Flat Top
  • Strop: SRD Latigo
  • Razor: Hayashi Diamond 6/8"
  • Post-Shave: Myrsol Antesol
Fresh off of the hones and this razor took a great edge. I didn't push the edge as much as last time (15 laps of the Naniwa 12k) and no CrOx, giving a super smooth edge which should hopefully last longer than before. Mike's as always was exceptional.

Interesting experiences from both of you, I really like the progress, so much so that I picked up a Mergress last week. I leave mine dialed to 3 or 3.5 on occasions, use feathers and get no problems at all with it delivering very nice shaves.

Does anyone else use their soap puck like a shave stick?

Yes - absolutely! So much quicker and faster than standing their twirling a brush for ages and my stubble loads a lot of soap very fast. Particularly triple milled soaps like MWF - they become a piece of cake!

Time is of the essence in many of my shaves and this method helps immensely!

Where did you get the Williams and AV from?

From Walmart, I bought the puck for our 2016 May Madness challenge.

Pre-Shave: @khun_diddy Olive Oil Soap, cold water
Razor: BBS-1
Blade: Voskhod (1)
Brush: Doug Korn Epsilon 2-band
Lather: Australian Private Reserve Alfredus Choice
Post-shave: Alum, Stirling Bay Laurel Witch Hazel, South Australian Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Scent: Australian Private Reserve Alfredus Choice EdP

Wonderful Alfredus day shave with some beautiful lather - I hope you all have a stellar start into the new week (y)

Le Pere Lucien - Traditional / Semogue Boar / Tanifuji
/ Floid 'Vigoroso'

Relaxing Sunday morning shave with the LPL - this is a great soap with one of the best containers around IMHO. The only downside is the flimsy paper label, which isn't waterproof and has long ago fallen off in a drawer somewhere - but the steel container is fantastic. Its the original "Traditional" scent - lots of lavender and maybe some citrus? Very fresh and well suited to the glorious Sydney day outside. The lather is amazing, very slick and creamy. The Tanifuji glided over in two passes with no nicks.
Splash of Floid and the last day of the weekend is underway...

Enjoy your Sunday comrades ;)

That is one very fine razor!

Pre: Nil
Brush: Paladin 26mm Lotus Ebony
Soap: Jabonman - Brisa de Oriente (East Breeze)
Strop: DIY Roo
Razor: PN No4 "Eldyenne"
Post: APR - Bay City, Abbie & Grace Soap Works (me!) Balm

Thanks to the generosity of one of our members I have a number of Eufros/Jabonman samples. I might do a quick review in a thread elsewhere. Needless to say performance was great and I really enjoyed the spicy scent. Nice to have an APR splash to pair with it too which as it happens is an early delivery from the impending APR Winter release. Winter continues to dry my face like nobody's business, so my home made moisture balm is just the ticket. Too heavy for summer but perfect for winter and lasts. Another great shave and I still need a better camera/lighting!

Fatip Grande with Lord Racer (2)
Cella
Nonno's old boar brush
Re-lather and cold rinse.

3 pass BBS. Went with as much Italian stuff as possible to honour my Dad as we had his funeral today. Not an easy day...

Nonno's old brush from the 60s/ 70s seemed particularly fitting. It is a very soft brush but I remain amazed at the lather it produces from very little pressure. It's the best brush I have despite being a doughnut with all its middle bristles having broken.

Sorry for your loss mate.

The Apollo was interesting. Marked "Apollo" and "Solingen Germany" it was sold as a "Travel Razor" and certainly is compact in a little chrome case that is surprisingly solid and heavy. It is a full-size razor and the handle is solid metal that is painted/coated in cream enamel - very sturdy for a "travel" razor. The head is lighter, being mainly plastic, but feels well-balanced overall. Certainly not like using the PAA Bakelite Slant which feels very lightweight. One side of the head is serrated and the other is smooth. I assumed the serrated side would be more aggressive - but this didn't seem to be the case. The serrated side seemed much smoother to shave with, the non-serrated side gave more audible feedback and seemed more aggressive. Still a mid-range aggressiveness overall - around 5-6 on a Gillette Slim.

Overall a very pleasant shave in three passes with a new razor that I had not seen or used before - topped off with the lavender of "The General" and it's not a bad way to start a Monday!

If anyone has any more info on this razor I would be interested to hear it :)

My condolences @RazorPlay - don't get many worse days than that one.
